Postgraduate Programme in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
A. Definition of the Programme
1. The Continuing Education Strategic Management Board and the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre shall jointly offer a Programme in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) at postgraduate level.
2. The Continuing Education Strategic Management Board and the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre shall jointly elect for the supervision of the Programme a Standing Committee which shall have the power to arrange lectures and other instruction.
3. The Programme is available on a part-time basis only.
4. The Programme will be delivered through a combination of face-to-face and online teaching.
5. The following awards shall be available within the Programme:
i. Postgraduate Certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (PGCert in CBT);
ii. Postgraduate Certificate in Enhanced Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (PGCert in ECBT)
iii. Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (PGDip in CBT);
iv. Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (Severe Mental Health Problems) (PGDip in CBT(SMHP));
v. Master of Science in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (MSc in CBT).
Not all PG Certificates in ECBT may be available every year.
B. Admission and Progression
6. Students may be admitted to the Programme to study for either of the Postgraduate Certificates or either of the Postgraduate Diplomas. Entry to the MSc is only available to students who have completed one of the Postgraduate Diplomas
7. Students may be permitted to transfer from the PGCert CBT to the PGDip CBT or the PGDip CBT (SMHP) provided they do so by 15 December of the year in which they enrolled for the PGCert.
8. Transfer between the Postgraduate Diplomas is not permitted.
9. Students registered for the PGDip CBT (SMHP) may only progress to the second year of the award if they have successfully completed papers Core 1, Core 2, Core 3, and Core 4.
10. Students registered for the PGDip CBT or the PGDip CBT(SMHP) who have passed the requirements for the PGCert CBT but have failed to meet the requirements for the PGDip for which they are registered, or who do not wish to continue their studies may be awarded the PG Cert CBT as an exit award.
11. Students registered for the PGDip CBT (SMHP) who have satisfied the examiners in the requirements for the award of the PGCert ECBT and who do not wish to continue their studies may end their registration at that point and be awarded the PGCert ECBT for the specialism studied as an exit award in addition to the PGCert CBT as provided for in clause 10 above.
12. Candidates for the MSc will be expected to have satisfactorily completed either of the PGDips normally not more than two years before registering for the MSc.
13. On registering for the MSc, students will be required to matriculate and be accepted by a college.
C. Duration
14. The PGCert CBT, the PGCert ECBT, and the PGDip CBT will be taught over three terms. The PGDip CBT (SMHP) will be taught over six terms.
The MSc CBT will be taught over three terms for the clinical strand and six terms for the research strand not including any time spent registered for a PGCert or PGDip.
D. Criteria for awards
15. Every candidate for an award will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:
I. PGCert CBT
Core 1 One case presentation of up to twenty minutes in duration
Core 2 One clinical recording passed at a minimum of the lower level of the Assessment in Core CBT skills criteria
Core 3 One case report of not more than 4,000 words
II. PGCert ECBT
For the Psychosis and Bipolar stream:
P and B 1 One case presentation of up to twenty minutes in duration
P and B 2 Clinical recording I passed at a minimum of the lower level of the Assessment in Core CBT skills criteria
P and B 3 Clinical recording II passed at the higher level of the Assessment in Core CBT Skills criteria
P and B4 One case report of not more than 6,000 words
For the Psychological Trauma and Personality Disorder stream:
PT/PD 1 One clinical assessment report of not more than 2,000 words
PT/PD 2 One case presentation of up to twenty minutes in duration
PT/PD 3 One clinical recording passed at the higher level of the Assessment in Core CBT Skills criteria
PT/PD 4 One case report of not more than 4,000 words
For the Supervision and Training stream:
S and T 1 One asssignment of not more than 2,000 words based onthe theoretical content
S and T 2 One supervision recording, passed according to the Supervisor Competency Scale (SCS) accompanied by a supervision critique of not more than 2,000 words
S and T 3 One training report of not more than 4,000 words
For the Children and Adolescents stream:
C and A 1 Case report I of not more than 4,000 words
C and A 2 Clinical recording I passed at the higher level of the Assessment in Core CBT Skills criteria
C and A 3 Clinical recording II passed at the higher level of the Assessment in Core CBT Skills criteria
C and A 4 Case report II of not more than 4,000 words
III. PGDip CBT
Papers Core 1, Core 2 and Core 3 as listed for the PGCert CBT. Core 2 must be passed at the higher level of the Assessment in Core CBT Skills criteria.
Core 4 Clinical recording II passed at the higher level of the Assessment in Core CBT Skills criteria
Core 5 Case presentation II of up to twenty minutes in duration
Core 6 Clinical III passed at the higher level of the Assessment in Core CBT Skills criteria
Core 7 Case report II of not more than 4,000 words

IV. PGDip CBT (SMHP)
Year 1
Papers Core 1, Core 2, Core 3 and Core 4 as listed for the PGCert CBT and the PGDip CBT. Core 2 must be passed at the higher level of the Assessment in Core CBT Skills criteria.
Year 2
One training portfolio
And
Either:
Psychosis and Bipolar pathway: All assessment as listed for the PGCert ECBT (P and B)
Or:
Psychological Trauma and Personality Development pathway: All assessment as listed for the PGCert ECBT (PT/PD)
V. MSc CBT
Either:
A dissertation of not more than 15,000 words on a subject selected by the candidate in consultation with the supervisor and approved by any two of the examiners.
Or:
Assessment as detailed for any one of the streams for the PGCert ECBT listed at II. above which has not already been submitted for an earlier award.
16. Written work for the PGCerts, the PGDips and the MSc shall be submitted via the University approved online submission system according to the deadlines and instructions in the course handbooks published at the beginning of each academic year.
17. Recordings of clinical and supervision sessions shall be submitted by such means and by such dates as are provided in the course or specialism handbook. Presentations shall be delivered at such times and locations as are provided in the course or specialism handbook.
18. Where a dissertation is to be submitted for the MSc, it shall be uploaded to the University approved online assessment platform in the format to be prescribed in the course handbook, no later than noon on the second Thursday in July of the final year of the course.
E. Reassessment
19. Candidates who fail to satisfy the examiners in any of the assessments are permitted to resubmit work in respect of the part or parts of the examination that they have failed on not more than one occasion without being required to repeat attendance at the relevant teaching. The resubmission will normally be within one year of the original failure.
F. Subsuming of previous modules and awards under the Programme
20. If any student who has previously successfully completed the PGCert CBT and ended their registration on the Programme is subsequently admitted to the PGDip CBT or the PG Dip CBT (SMHP), the Standing Committee shall have the discretion to deem satisfactory completion of the PGCert CBT as having met the examination requirements in 15. above. The Standing Committee may delegate this power to the Admissions Panel. Such discretion will normally only be exercised if:
i. The recording submitted as Core 2 was passed at the higher level of the ACCS criteria, and;
ii. The time elapsed between completion of the PGCert and registration for the PGDip is not more than two years.
21. If a student who has been awarded a PGDip or PGCert is subsequently awarded a higher award, the MSc or PGDip will subsume the lower award.
