Master of Studies in Creative Translation
1. All candidates must follow a course of instruction in Creative Translation at Oxford for a period of three terms.
2. All candidates shall be required to offer A, B, C, and D as defined in 3 below.
All assessment is to be formatted and submitted electronically as specified in the course handbook. All assessment must be submitted in English.
3. Candidates are required to complete the following:
(A) The Core Course, Issues in Translation.
Candidates are required to submit an essay of between 5,000-7,000 words. The essay must be submitted by noon on Thursday of Week 10 of Hilary term.
(B) Special Subject 1
For Special Subject 1, candidates must select a non-language specific paper addressing a translation topic broadly defined from those listed in the Course Handbook.
Candidates are required to submit either:
[i] an essay, or a portfolio of essays, of between 5,000-7,000 words
Or
[ii] a comparative critical analysis of existing translations of between 5,000-7,000 words
Or
[iii] a translation and self-reflective piece of between 5,000-7,000 words
Details of allowed submission content for each Special Subject are specified in the course handbook.
Special Subject 1 must be submitted by noon on Thursday of Week 10 of Michaelmas term.
(C) Special Subject 2
For Special Subject 2, candidates must select from those listed in the Course Handbook.
Candidates are required to submit, depending on the chosen Special Subject, either:
[i] an essay, or a portfolio of essays, of between 5,000-7,000 words
Or
[ii] a comparative critical analysis of existing translation of between 5,000-7,000 words
Or
[iii] a translation and self-reflective piece of between 5,000-7,000 words
Details of allowed submission content for each Special Subject are specified in the course handbook.
Special Subject 2 must be submitted by noon on Thursday of Week 0 of Trinity term.
(D) Independent Translation and reflective prose
Candidates must submit an independent translation project with a piece of reflective prose on creative practice of between 8,000-10,000 words. The detailed assessment requirements are specified in the course handbook. The translation project and reflective prose must be submitted by noon on Thursday Week 7 of Trinity term.
4. In order to pass the degree, a student must pass all of assessments A-D. A candidate who has failed to satisfy the examiners in any one of the assessments may enter again for that assessment and will be required to re-submit the relevant component(s) by noon of the final Monday of September following their first examination. Candidates may resubmit on one occasion only.
