Master of Science by Coursework in Biodiversity, Conservation, and Nature Recovery

1. The programme shall be under the supervision of the Graduate Teaching and Examinations Committee of the School of Geography and the Environment.

2. Each candidate will be required to follow a course of instruction in Biodiversity, Conservation and Nature Recovery for one year full-time.

3. Candidates must submit three portfolios of work as detailed below, and also attend two elective courses. 

Portfolio 1 – Foundations

4. Candidates must submit a 1,500 word case study analysis and a 5 minute recorded presentation by noon on Tuesday of week 0 of Hilary term. 

Portfolio 2 – Applications

5. Candidates must submit a 1,000 word individual report on a group project undertaken during the course fieldtrip by noon on Friday of the week following the fieldtrip. In addition, candidates must take a written examination and also present themselves for a viva voce examination at the beginning of Trinity term.  

Portfolio 3 – Research

6. Candidates must present themselves for an oral presentation on their research proposal during Trinity term, and submit a 1,500 word annotated bibliography, a 1,000 word briefing note, and a 7,000-9,000 word research paper by noon on the first Tuesday in September.

7. Candidates should refer to the Course Handbook for full details of the requirements for each assessment.

8. All assessments must be submitted using the University approved online submission system. Technical information on the requirements for online submissions is provided in the Course Handbook.  

9. Arrangements for reassessment will be as follows: 

Portfolio 1 – Foundations: Candidates who fail either assessment for Portfolio 1 will have the opportunity to resubmit the failed assessment in week 3 of Trinity term. 

Portfolio 2 – Applications: Candidates who fail any of the assessments for Portfolio 2 will have the opportunity to resubmit/resit the failed assessment(s) in July. 

Portfolio 3 – Research: Candidates who fail the research proposal presentation will have the opportunity to make a further presentation in July. In the case of failure of the remaining assessments in Portfolio 3, the assessment(s) may be resubmitted either by noon on Tuesday of week 0 of Hilary term the following year, or by the deadline in clause 6 in the following year.  

Candidates will be informed of the exact dates for re-submissions/re-examination/further presentations after the exam board has confirmed that reassessment is required. 

10. Candidates must present themselves for a viva voce examination if required by the examiners.
