Honour School of Music
A
- The Honour School of Music shall encompass teaching and research principally in the following areas: historical musicology, music theory and analysis, ethnomusicology, music education, sound studies, empirical musicology, composition, and performance.
- No candidate shall be admitted to examination in this school, unless they have either passed or been exempted from the First Public Examination.
- The examination in this faculty shall be under the supervision of the Board of the Faculty of Music.
B
- Papers are divided into four lists, as outlined in the Schedule. Each candidate will be required to offer seven papers. Papers a) and b) will be taken in the candidate’s second year of their degree; papers c) to g) will be taken in the candidate’s third year of their degree.
- Candidates must take:
a) one paper from List Ia;
b) one paper from List Ib;
c) one paper from List III;
d) one double-weighted project from List IV;
e), f), g) three further papers from lists I-IV.
- For papers e), f), and g) the following restrictions apply:

- Candidates taking List IV Solo Performance, whether single- or double-weighted, may take only one paper from List IIb.
- Candidates taking double-weighted Composition from List IV must take at least one paper from List IIa.
- Candidates may only take one double-weighted project from List IV, with the option to offer one single-weighted List IV project in addition to the double-weighted project. A list of permissible single-weighted projects will be published in the course handbook.
- Candidates selecting options from List Ia and/or List Ib may not duplicate topics already chosen for second-year assessments.
Schedule
Available options under each list will be published in the course handbook
List I: Topics
Second Year:
List Ia: written examination, to be taken in the candidate’s second year;
List Ib: coursework submission; submission will be due by noon on Thursday of Week 8 of Trinity term in the candidate’s second year.
Third Year:
Candidates have the option to offer up to three third-year Topics papers; these may be drawn from List Ic or from eligible List Ia and Ib topics, subject to clause B 3.(iv) above. All List I assessments taken in the third year will be assessed by coursework submission, which will be due by noon on Thursday of Week 9 of Hilary term of the candidate’s third year. Information on List Ia and Ib topics available for third-year coursework will be published in the course handbook.
List II: Technical and Practical options
The mode of assessment for each option in this list will be published in the course handbook. For those options requiring coursework submissions, these must be submitted by:
Stylistic Composition II noon on Thursday of Week 2, Trinity term
Recording and Producing Music noon on Thursday of Week 4, Trinity term
Orchestration noon on Thursday of Week 3, Trinity term
Free Improvisation noon on Thursday of Week 2, Trinity term
List III: Critical Music Studies
Written examination to be taken in the candidate’s third year.
List IV: Project
Coursework submission or practical examination, to be taken in the candidate’s third year. Coursework submission will be due by noon on Tuesday of Week 1 of Trinity term in the candidate’s third year.
