Master of Science by Coursework in Applied Landscape Archaeology

[For students starting before MT 2016:

• 1. Every candidateCandidates must follow for at least six terms a part-time course of instruction in Applied Landscape Archaeology. andThe mustcourse uponis enteringavailable for examination produce from his or her societyon a certificatepart-time tobasis thatonly effectover a period of six terms.

• 2. TheEvery examinationcandidate will consistbe ofrequired to satisfy the examiners in the following parts:

  • Aa)  Core Topics

    Every candidate must submit twoTwo written assignments each of no more than 2,500 words in length for each of the two core topic courses on:

    • (1)i. Method and Theory in Landscape Archaeology;

    • (2)ii. Managing Twenty-first21st Century Landscapes.;

  • One core topic will be taken in each year of the course.;

  • Bb) Advanced Papers

    Every candidate must follow four of the six Advanced Paper courses listed in the Schedule below, and submit oneA written assignment of nonot more than 5,000 words in length for each paperof four Advanced Papers taken from the Schedule below.  At the discretion of the Course Director, one of the Advanced Papers may be substituted by a portfolio of not more than 5,000 words on topics covered during a placement undertaken with the approval of the Course Director.  Candidates will take two Advanced Papers per year of the M.Sc.MSc;

  • c) A log book of not more than 2,500 words documenting the field training week;

    Cd) Dissertation

    A dissertation of not more than 15,000 words, including appendices but excluding bibliography, on a topic selected by the candidate in consultation with the supervisor and approved by the candidate'sexaminers;

    e) supervisorA viva voce examination at the end of the course of study.

  • Assignments shall be uploaded to the University approved online assessment platform for consideration by the examiners by such dates as the examiners shall determine and of which they shall notify candidates. The dissertation must be deliveredsubmitted in the digital format prescribed in the course handbook not later than noon on the last Monday in September of the second year of the course to the ChairUniversity ofapproved Examinersonline forassessment the Degree of M.Sc. in Applied Landscape Archaeology, c/o Examination Schools, High Street, Oxfordplatform.

  3. Candidates must attend one compulsory field training week (or in exceptional circumstances equivalent day or weekend schools) during their registration on the course.

• 4. Each candidate must attend a viva voce examination when required to do so by the examiners.

• 5. The examiners may award a distinction for excellence in the whole examination.

• 6. A candidate who fails a core topic or advanced paper, or whose dissertation fails to satisfy the examiners, may be permitted to retake the paper, or resubmit the dissertation, on one further occasion only, not later than one year after the initial attempt.

Advanced Papers are available in the following areas:

• 1. Archaeological prospection

• 2. Reading the historic landscape

• 3. Artefacts and Ecofacts in the landscape

• 4. Digital landscapes

• 5. Placement work

• 6. Geoarchaeology

Not all advanced papers will be available in any one year and the definitive list of advanced papers available in any one year will be circulated to candidates and their supervisors during the second week of Michaelmas Term.]

[For students starting from MT 2016:

• 1. Candidates must follow a course of instruction in Applied Landscape Archaeology. The course is available on a part-time basis only over a period of six terms.

• 2. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:

  • a) Attendance at classes, tutorials, supervisions, group seminars, practicals, the field training week, field trips and other teaching sessions as required;

  • b) Two written assignments each of no more than 2,500 words for each of the two core topic courses on:

    • i. Method and Theory in Landscape Archaeology;

      ii. Managing 21st Century Landscapes;

  • One core topic will be taken in each year of the course;

  • c) A written assignment of not more than 5,000 words for each of four Advanced papers taken from the Schedule below. Candidates will take two Advanced Papers per year of the MSc;

    d) A log book of not more than 2,500 words documenting the field training week;

    e) A dissertation of not more than 15,000 words, on a topic selected by the candidate in consultation with the supervisor and approved by the examiners;

    f) A viva voce examination at the end of the course of study.

  • Assignments shall be delivered via the approved online submission system to the Registry Department for Continuing Education 1 Wellington Square Oxford OX1 2JA for consideration by the examiners by such dates as the examiners shall determine and of which they shall notify candidates. The dissertation must be delivered in hard copy and in digital copy not later than noon on the last Monday in September of the second year of the course to the Chairman of Examiners for the Degree of MSc in Applied Landscape Archaeology c/o Examination Schools High Street Oxford.

  3. The examiners may award a distinction for excellence in the whole examination.

  4. A candidate who fails a core topic or advanced paper, or whose dissertation fails to satisfy the examiners, may be permitted to retake the paper, or resubmit the dissertation, on one further occasion only, not later than one year after the initial attempt.
