Master of Science by Coursework in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition

Differences from 2018/19 to 2023/24

    1. 1. The CandidatesCourse may normally onlyshall be admitted tounder the course if they have successfully obtained an honours degree in a discipline related to applied linguistics.

    2. 2. The course shall consist of six taught modules and a dissertation. 

    3. 3. An electronic copy of eachsupervision of the threeAcademic Michaelmas Term assignments must be uploaded to the Assignments sectionCommittee of the Department of Education's.

    4. Candidates Highermust Degreesfollow WebLearna site no later than noon on the Fridaycourse of Weekinstruction 0 Hilary Term, and an electronic copy of each of thefor three Hilaryterms, Term assignments must be uploaded to the Assignments section of the Department of Education's Higher Degrees WebLearn site no later than noon on the Friday of Week 0 of Trinity Termfull-time.

    5. 4. Candidates will alsotake six one-term core modules. Each core module will be assessed through a take-home summative assessment, consisting of an essay of up to 2,500 words.

    6. Candidates are also required to submit a dissertation of between 15,000 and 20,000 words (including footnotes/endnotes but excluding appendices and references or bibliography) on a subject selected by theno candidatelater in consultation with the supervisor, which must be closely related to one or more of the themes of the course.  The subject and title selected by the candidate must be approved by the Course Director at a time to be announced at the beginning of the academic year in which the examination is taken.

    7. 5.  An electronic copy of the dissertation must be uploaded to the Department of Education’s Higher Degrees WebLearn site bythan noon on the second Friday of August of the yearThursday in whichAugust.   

    8. All the final Module examination has been taken. This copy should be anonymous except for the candidate number. The dissertationassessments must be accompaniedsubmitted byusing athe declarationUniversity’s indicatingonline thatsubmission itsystem. Technical information on the requirements for online submissions is the candidate’s own work. Candidates will also be required to submit a hardbound copy of the dissertation to the Department of Education no later than one week after submission of the electronic copy. The hardbound copy of the dissertation of each candidate who passes the examination shall be retained by the department for depositprovided in the departmentalCourse libraryHandbook.

       
    9. 6. If a candidate receives a failing mark for any of the summative assessments, they may resubmitre-sit the assessment on one further occasion. The submission date of the re-sit will be the next time the module is assessed in the following year, eitheror by a date for resubmission which will be published by the Course Director when the results are released, andwhich will be no sooner than 6 weeks from the release of the results, or when the assessment is next examined the following year. If a candidate fails the dissertation, they may resubmit the dissertation one further timeit on the next occasion when thisdissertations isare examined. Candidates who fail any modules, or at an earlier date as agreed with the dissertationCourse Director. Grades for re-sits of summative assessments and re-submissions of dissertations are normally capped at the first attempt cannot normally be awarded more than 50 at resubmission.

       
    10. 7. The candidate may also be examined orally. The oral examination will normally be on the candidate's dissertation.

    11. 8. The examiners may award a distinction for excellence in the whole examination.
