Master of Science by Coursework in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition

Differences from 2014/15 to 2023/24

    1. 1. The CandidatesCourse may normally onlyshall be admitted tounder the course if they have successfully obtained an honours degree which contained a substantial element of second language learning and/or linguistics.

    2. 2. The course shall consist of eight taught modules (constituting Part 1supervision of the examination)Academic and a dissertation (constituting Part 2Committee of the examination)Department of Education. Candidates shall be deemed to have passed the examination if they have satisfied the examiners in both Part 1 and Part 2.

    3. Candidates must follow a course of instruction for three terms, full-time.

    5. Candidates will take six one-term core modules. EveryEach candidatecore who is required to complete Part 1module will be requiredassessed through a take-home summative assessment, consisting of an essay of up to complete2,500 all eight Modules of the course unless they can make a case for prior accreditation (by virtue of having successfully completed the Diploma in Education, Modern Foreign Languages), in which case they will be required to complete six Modules, and this will constitute Part 1 of the examination for these candidateswords. Candidates must pass Part 1 by examination or by prior accreditation before submitting a dissertation for Part 2. Interim marks for the first four Modules of Part 1 will be released to candidates following the first meeting of the Examination Board. At the close of the examination in Part 1, a list of candidates shall be published who have satisfied the examiners in that part of the examination.

    6. 4. Every candidate will be required to satisfy the examiners in the following:

      • (i) Satisfactory attendance at the appropriate classroom-based courses;

      • (ii) Satisfactory performance in both Part 1 and Part 2.

    7. 5. An electronic copy of each of the four Michaelmas Term assignments must be uploaded to the Assignments section of the Higher Degrees Weblearn no later than noon on the Friday of Week 0 Hilary Term, and an electronic copy of each of the four Hilary Term assignments must be uploaded to the Assignments section of the Higher Degrees Weblearn no later than Friday of Week 0 of Trinity Term. Part-time students must submit assignments for two modules on each of these occasions over a period of two years.

    8. 6. Candidates willare bealso required to submit a dissertation of between 15,000 and 20,000 words (including footnotes/endnotes but excluding appendices and references or bibliography) on a subject selected by the candidate in consultation with the supervisor, which must be closely related to one or more of the themes of the course. The subject and title selected by the candidate must be approved by Departmental Board not later than the first day of the fifth week of Hilary Term of the course (for full-time candidates) and of the second year of the course (for part-time candidates).

    9. 7. Three word processed or printed copies of the dissertation must be delivered to the Chair of the Examiners, M.Sc. in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition, c/o Examination Schools, High Street, Oxford, OX2 6PY notno later than noon on the lastsecond FridayThursday ofin August.   

    10. All assessments must be submitted using the University’s online submission system. Technical information on the requirements for online submissions is provided in the Course Handbook. 
    11. If a candidate receives a failing mark for any of the yearsummative inassessments, whichthey may re-sit the finalassessment Moduleon examinationone hasfurther been taken. One copy should be hard bound and two soft bound, the latter of which should be anonymous except for the candidate numberoccasion. The hardsubmission bound copydate of the dissertationre-sit ofwill each candidate who passesbe the examinationnext shalltime bethe retainedmodule is assessed in the following year, or by a date published by the departmentCourse forDirector, depositwhich inwill be no sooner than 6 weeks from the departmental library. The dissertation must be accompanied by a declaration indicating that it is the candidate’s own work. Candidates will also be required to submit an electronic copyrelease of the dissertation to Weblearn by noon on the same dayresults. If Parta 1candidate is failed,fails the candidatedissertation, they may retakeresubmit the whole examination of Part 1 one further timeit on the next occasion when thisdissertations isare examined., Ifor Partat 2an isearlier faileddate as agreed with the candidateCourse may resubmit the dissertation one further time on the next occasion when it is examined.

    12. 8. The candidate may also be examined orallyDirector. The oral examination may only be on the candidate's dissertation.

    13. 9. The examiners may award a distinctionGrades for excellencere-sits inof thesummative whole examination.
