Master of Science by Coursework in Global Health Science and Epidemiology

Differences from 2019/20 to 2022/23

  • 1. The Divisional Board of Medical Sciences will appoint an Organising Committee to supervise the course, which will have the power to arrange lectures and other instruction.

  • 2. The Organising Committee of the course will appoint an academic adviser for each candidate.

  • 3. Each candidate must follow a course of study in Global Health Science and Epidemiology for at least three terms and for a substantial part of the three subsequent vacations, as determined by the course timetable.

  • 4.   Candidates shallmust be examined in all ofcomplete the following waysassessment:

    • (i) A report of not more than 2500 words on an analysis of a dataset based on a research question approved by the Examination Board and based on material studied in the Principles of Statistics and Principles of Epidemiology modules. Additionally, candidatesCandidates must submit an annotated copy of all statistical code used for the data analysis.

    • (ii) An assignment of not more than 4000 words selected from a choice of topics approved by the Examination Board and based on the modules studied as set out in the Schedule.

    • (iii) A written examination paper relating to the Principles of Epidemiology, and the Principles of Statistics.

    • (iviii) AFour writtenoption examinationmodules paper,from relatingthose tolisted Advanced Global Health Science, relating toin the remainingSchedule. modulesFor each option module candidates must submit a report of not more than 2500 words. The topic and structure of the report will be set out in the Schedule,course withhandbook. Candidates will be expected to draw on the exceptioncontent of Principlesthe ofIntroduction Epidemiology,to andGlobal PrinciplesHealth ofScience Statisticsmodule in the reports for the four option modules.

    • (viv) A printed dissertation of not more than 10,000 words on a research project as set out in the Schedule below. The research project and the subject of the dissertation must have been approved by the OrganisingCourse CommitteeDirectors. Candidates will be required to draw on the content of the course.International Research Ethics module when conducting their research project and in the dissertation  

  • 5. Candidates may be examined viva voce and this examination will take place on dates to be determined by the examiners.

  • 6. The arrangements for submission of the dissertation will be notifiedpublished toin candidatesthe course handbook at the start of the Michaelmas Term of the academic year in which the examination is takencourse.

  • 7. The written submissions for assessment (i) and (iiiii) must be uploaded to the AssignmentsUniversity sectionapproved ofonline theassessment appropriate section of the course WebLearn siteplatform by the dates to be specified by the Organising Committee ofin the course andhandbook published in the University Gazette, not later thanat the start of Michaelmas term of the academic year in which the examination is takencourse. Each submission must be accompanied by a declaration of authorship by the candidate.

  • Research Project: 

  • A research project will be conducted under the supervision of a research placement supervisor. Following the written examinations, students will undertake reading and research in relation to their research project during Trinity Term and part of the long vacation. The subject of each student's dissertation, and the supervision arrangements for each student must be approved by the OrganisingCourse Committee of the courseDirectors.
